Higgins Building
Building Address: 108 West 2th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Building Location: Old Bank District
Description/History: The Higgins Building was built in 1910 by A.L. Haley. In the early days, this beautiful Beaux Arts building was once occupied by Job Harriman, a labor lawyer and one time mayoral candidate on the socialist ticket. Historically, the building is best known as the headquarters of the General Petroleum Corporation. General Petroleum moved into room 402 in 1911 and slowly expanded until it finally one day occupied nearly the entire building. In 1949, General Petroleum moved to what is now known as the Pegasus Building. Slowly the few remaining tenants moved out. Years later the Los Angeles County Engineering Department moved in and remained until 1977. After 1977, the Higgins building was left abandoned for many years and left to decay until it was purchased by developer Barry Shy and rehabilitated. The Higgins was one of the first buildings in the Downtown area to be offered for sale to new city dwellers. The building still has many yesteryear charms including tiled and marble floors, iron entry gates, high ceilings in common areas and steel caged elevator doors. This building is very popular and sought after in the downtown market. A great perk for pizza lovers is the recent addition of the Pitfire Pizza restaurant on street level.
