Building Address: 257 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Building Location: Old Bank District
Description/History: The Douglas Building, built in 1898 by James W. Reid and Merritt J. Reid, is located between the Old Bank and Historic Core district. It features 50 units within 5 floors. The developers of the Douglas Building spared no expense when they rehabilitated these units. Fittings include Poggen Pohl state–of– the- art- kitchens and WaterWorks Bathrooms. There are 20 different floor plans, 7 two-level penthouses, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls and original double hung windows. These New York styled lofts are all pre-wired for high speed internet access and cable. In the past the Douglas Building tenants included the chief ticket office of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, Desmond’s Men’s Store and Eagleson’s Men’s Store. Late in Reid’s life he began planning the Douglas Building as an eight-story building, but died as the plans were being finalized. His heirs continued with the project, scaling it down to five-stories. The Douglas Building was determined eligible for the National Register in 1983. The total project cost to rehabilitate was estimated at $9,000,000 by the end of June 2005.
