Description/History: Built in 1905, the ShyBarry Lofts was once the home of the Fifth Street Stores (AKA Walkers Department Store). Well Known architect, Alexander Curlett, is responsible for the beautifully designed Beaux Arts building. Alexander Curtlett was part of the most exclusive and successful architectural firm in the Los Angeles (Curtlett and Beelman). In 2004, developer Barry Shy rehabilitated this property primarily for rental use. One year later, the developer decided to convert the units to sale units and offered the 26 various floor plans to the public. The building’s estimated cost to rehab was $35,000,000. The ShyBarry Building is recognized for its historical value and was appointed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It’s unknown whether or not this building has considered applying for the Mills Act.
